Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 18: YouTube is introducing a new system for counting video views. This could significantly change the numbers creators see on their channels. From August 24 onwards, the platform will count a view as soon as a video begins playing. It will not require viewers to watch it for a specific amount of time.
The new method will apply across YouTube, covering both regular videos and Shorts. According to the platform, the aim is to create a common system for measuring views and give creators a clearer idea of their overall reach.
The change could also benefit creators when they work with advertisers. Higher view totals may make it easier for them to demonstrate the exposure their content receives to potential brand partners.
However, the new system will not change the way YouTube measures eligibility or earnings under its Partner Programme. Creators will still have access to “Engaged views,” a separate metric designed to show how many people continued watching after a video started.
The move has initiated a debate among creators. Some fear that a sharp rise in view counts could make metrics such as average watch duration less meaningful. This could become particularly important for creators who depend on brand sponsorships, where advertisers often consider audience engagement alongside total views.
Further, there are also concerns regarding autoplay. One creator claimed that YouTube confirmed a video could register a view when it automatically starts playing on the app’s homepage. If so, creators could see substantially larger view figures even when users did not actively select the video.
For viewers, the change may go largely unnoticed. For creators and advertisers, however, the difference between a simple view and an engaged view could become increasingly important when assessing a video’s actual performance.
