Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 22: Odisha could face a possible cyclone threat in the coming week. This comes as a weather system of the North Andaman Sea moves northwestwards. It is expected to develop into a low-pressure over the Bay of Bengal around October 23.
The system is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal before moving northwestwards and potentially intensifying. Several international weather models have indicated the possibility of cyclone formation. The system could potentially move towards the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
As per the European weather model, the system could approach the coast around October 27, with a possible landfall on October 28. Its track, intensity, and potential landfall, however, remain uncertain.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued an official update confirming the cyclone formation. Meteorologists said the system’s development and movement would depend on weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.
Further, meteorologist Sarat Chandra Sahi said that some models indicate that the system could intensify. But, forecasts remain inconsistent regarding its direction and strength. He said favorable conditions could allow it to develop from a deep depression into a cyclonic storm.
The system will continue to be monitored as it develops over the Bay of Bengal. Further assessments of its potential impact on the Odisha coast will depend on subsequent meteorological observations and official forecasts.
