Bhubaneswar, March 7: The Odisha government has collected revenue worth Rs 6754.96 crore from export of iron ore during the financial year 2022-23 to 2024-25.
According to official data, the State has collected a total revenue of Rs 683.98 crore during the financial year 2022-23, which was increased to Rs 3596.62 crore in the financial year of 2023-24. During the last fiscal year, the State has earned a total revenue of Rs 2474.36 crore.
The State dispatched 134.57 million tonnes (MTs), 167.61 MTs and 169.01 MTs of iron ore during the financial years 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25, respectively.
Of these quantities, the export figures stood at 6.44 MTs, 20.74 MTs and 17.96 MTs for the corresponding years. This translates to approximately 4.8 percent, 12.4 percent and 10.6 percent of the total dispatches being exported during the respective periods
The State exported 6.44 million tonne of iron ore during the financial year 2022-23 while 20.74 MTs of iron ore exported from the State in the year 2023-24 while the State has exported 17.96 MTs minerals to other countries in the last fiscal.
As per the data, the State got the highest amount of revenue from the export of iron ores. A large quantity of iron ore is being exported from the State to foreign countries each year.
A major portion 10.1 percent of the total dispatches in 2024-25 comprised low grade fines (below 58 percent Fe). These are predominantly exported, as the State currently lacks the technological capability to utilise such low-grade fines domestically hence export is a viable option for optimum mineral consumption point of view, the officials said.
The State had requested the Ministry of Mines in December 2025 for not to impose any export duty on iron ore fined below 58 percent Fe.
Notably, the Orissa High Court last year passed orders regarding under-utilisation of iron ore mines in the State.
The Court has directed the State Government to take action under the Minerals (Other than Atomic and Hydro Carbons Energy Minerals) Concession Rules, 2016 to ensure optimum utilisation of mines wherever required.
The said order of the Court is under examination for necessary consideration for its implementation, and further action will be taken in accordance with law, a senior government officer said.
