Industry Odisha Bureau May 23: When the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weekend bulletin has reportedly warned that the prevailing and unbearable heatwave conditions sweeping over the country would be more intense and severe over the next week, the Central Government has reportedly urged the electricity consumers to use the power supply judiciously citing heavy pressure being mounted on the national power grid.
As per the IMD’s latest warning: “Northwest, Central, Eastern and parts of Peninsular India are expected to remain under intense to severe heatwave conditions with warm night conditions over the coming week too.”
On the other hand, the Union Power Ministry has reportedly advised the nationwide electricity consumers via a social media post: “Although we are prepared to supply electricity as required, due to the intense summer, let us all try to use electricity wisely and judiciously.”
Notably, Electricity consumers of almost every household and establishment across the states have been bound down to use more cooling appliances like air-coolers and air-conditioners owing to the suffocating heatwave conditions prolonging till date.
In addition to it, household consumers are bound down to opt for induction cookstoves amid the LPG shortages due to the West Asia supply chain crisis for which the “electricity demand is potentially increasing the peak load by 27 GW (Giga Watt)”.
On the contrary, the Union Power Ministry reported: “India’s peak power demand on Friday stood at 267.5 GW after touching a record 270.8 GW on Thursday, the highest ever recorded.”
Moreover, the Central Electricity Authority reportedly said, “India’s power demand could touch 271 GW this year.”
As per media reports, “IMD data showed temperatures in several regions already ranging between 40°C and 47°C, while the summer mercury touched 48.2 degree Celsius in Uttar Pradesh (UP)’s Banda on May 19 this week.”
