Industry Odisha Bureau, July 7: A commercial oil tanker caught fire after being hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on early Tuesday. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre, the accident took place near Limah, Oman.
According to the British military, the vessel was travelling off the Oman coast when the incident occurred. Concerned authorities are yet to confirm who was responsible for the attack. No casualties have been reported yet.
The strait of Hormuz is a strategically important waterway as it is one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes. Global markets closely monitor any disruption in the region, especially amind ongoing tensions in West Asia.
Meanwhile, the body of Iran’s late Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, arrived in the holy city of Qom on Monday evening. This came after a funeral procession in Tehran which drew thousands of mourners.
As per reports, large crowds had gathered in the capital city of Iran to pay their last respects to Khamenei. The February 28 airstrike killed him and four of his family members. The strike was carried out by the US and Israel at the beginning of the conflict.
The procession moved through the streets of Tehran towards Azadi square. Mourners dressed in black gathered for the ceremony along with senior Iranian officials. A decorated truck carried Khamenei’s coffin draped in the Iranian flag, along with the coffins of his family members.
Reports also say that some of the mourners chanted anti-US slogans during the procession. These included calls for the death of US President Donald Trump.
Latest developments highlight ongoing tensions in West Asia and concerns over regional security, global energy markets and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
