Industry Odisha Bureau, Sept 23: Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has introduced an Automated Vehicle Verification System at 10 CNG stations in Delhi in order to strengthen safety checks for vehicles using compressed natural gas. Under the system, vehicles without a valid CNG cylinder hydro-test certificate will be denied refuelling.
The technology based system uses cameras installed at participating stations to capture vehicle registration numbers. The details are processed through an AI-based application that links the vehicle with its CNG cylinder information. It then checks the certification status through the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) online portal.
The system provides real time information on whether a cylinder’s hydro test certification is valid or expired. In case a vehicle is found to be non-compliant, alerts can be generated through handheld devices, LED displays and public announcement systems. This will allow the station staff to stop the refuelling process.
The automated mechanism supplements IGL’s existing safety checks, under which station personnel verify cylinder test validity and hydro test certificates before allowing CNG refuelling. IGL officers are also conducting regular inspections to ensure that the requirement is followed.
IGL said that the system will reduce dependence on manual verification. It will also create a more centralised and traceable mechanism for monitoring cylinder certification. The company also plans to integrate relevant certification information with vehicle databases in the future, subject to regulatory requirements.
The safety requirement is linked to the Gas Cylinder (Amended) Rules, 2025. Under Rule 35(1), CNG cylinders are required to undergo hydrotesting at a PESO-approved testing centre once in every three years.
