Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 19: A single dose of an experimental gene-editing treatment has produced a significant drop in LDL cholesterol in an early human trial. This has raised hopes for a new way to manage people with difficult-to-treat high cholesterol.
The treat is called Verve 102. IT is being developed for people with conditions such as familial hypercholesterolaemia and early coronary artery disease. Unlike medicines that need to be taken repeatedly, Verve 102 is designed to work after one infusion.
Its approach is different from conventional cholesterol drugs. The treatment uses base editing to make a targeted change in liver cells, reducing the activity of PCSK9. This protein normally contributes to the breakdown of LDL receptors, which help the liver remove “bad” cholesterol from the bloodstream.
Results from the early phase 1b Heart-2 trial showed LDL levels failing by between 9% and 62%, depending on the dose. PCSK9 levels dropped by around 51% to 88%. At the highest dose tested, LDL cholesterol fell by about 62%, equal to an average reduction of roughly 78 mg/dL.
Further, researchers continued to observe the effect for up to 18 months after the infusion. However, the findings do not yet prove that the treatment can keep cholesterol low for life or prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Notably, that distinction is important because Verve 102 is still being tested. It has not been approved for routine treatment and should not currently be viewed as an alternative to stains or other established cholesterol-lowering medicines.
