Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 18: A 16-year old boy from Delhi, weighing around 275 kg, has undergone a complex bariatric surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after severe obesity left him struggling with breathing and other health problems.
The teenager, whose BMI was close to 100, could not fit inside a regular car and had to be brought to the hospital in a Matador van. Doctors found that he was suffering from severe obstructive sleep apnea and widespread skin infections. He spent nearly two weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit while breathing-related complications were brought under control.
Given the risks involved, around 20 specialists from different departments assessed him before surgery. The team reviewed the possible challenges related to anesthesia, positioning, the laparoscopic procedure and post surgery respiratory care.
After discussions with his family, doctors decided that bariatric surgery was the most appropriate option. A team led by Dr Daksh Sethi, along with Dr Sudhir Kalhan, Dr Mukund Khetan and Dr Suviraj John, performed a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
The procedure was particularly challenging because of the teenager’s weight and body size. However, doctors were able to complete it successfully. He recovered well and was discharged just three days after the surgery.
