Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 10: Global temperatures matched an all-time monthly record in August. Surface air temperatures measured 1.65°C above pre-industrial baseline levels. This equalled July 2023’s previous record-high reading exactly. The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported these findings Thursday.
The reading also crossed a closely watched warming marker. August surpassed 1.5°C for the first time since November 2025. This reflects a single month’s anomaly, not a permanent shift. Long-term global averages have not permanently exceeded that threshold.
These atmospheric extremes coincided with intensifying El Niño conditions. The World Meteorological Organization confirmed El Niño had firmly developed. Forecasters expect the pattern to strengthen into coming months. WMO assigned near-certain odds of persistence through February 2027.
Ocean warmth mirrored the exceptional atmospheric readings simultaneously. Extra-polar sea surface temperatures matched their highest monthly average recorded. March 2024 had previously set that particular benchmark. A single day reached 21.11°C, the highest ever measured.
Much of this ocean warming centred on the tropical Pacific. Copernicus tied these elevated readings directly to strengthening El Niño. Sea surface and surface air temperatures measure different climate variables. Both nonetheless reached record or near-record territory together.
Real-world consequences followed these oceanic and atmospheric shifts. Copernicus noted conditions now favour intensified wildfire activity in Indonesia. This describes elevated fire risk, not confirmed large-scale outbreaks yet.
Western Europe simultaneously closed out its hottest summer on record. That summer exceeded the region’s previous 2003 benchmark comfortably. Further heatwaves struck throughout August across multiple countries. Elevated temperatures had persisted across the continent since May.
Persistent dryness accompanied this extended European heat wave. France, the UK, Hungary, Romania and Serbia reported severe drought. Major waterways suffered accordingly across the continent’s geography. The Rhine, Danube, Southern Bug and Dnieper all ran unusually low.
ECMWF’s Samantha Burgess described August as scientifically remarkable overall. She said the data captured extremes across atmosphere and ocean systems. These effects, she added, increasingly touch communities, economies and ecosystems worldwide.
Separately, UN Climate Change executive secretary Simon Stiell highlighted broader impacts. Speaking before European lawmakers, he cited strained infrastructure and disrupted trade. He pointed to falling crop yields and climbing global food prices. Stiell urged deeper international coordination on clean-energy supply chains.
UNEP has separately projected 1.5°C could be permanently crossed this decade. That forecast differs meaningfully from August’s temporary monthly reading.
Taken together, August illustrates how long-term warming trends interact with shorter-term natural variability. Untangling these overlapping influences remains central to interpreting the record.
