Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 04: ISRO has successfully launched its EOS-05 satellite into orbit. GSLV-F17 carried the spacecraft from Sriharikota early Friday. The mission marks India’s first dedicated geo-orbit imaging capability. EOS-05 is designed to deliver near real-time imagery. Its applications span agriculture, disaster management and strategic data needs.
This “eye on sky” satellite weighs 2,367 kilograms at launch. That makes it the heaviest payload GSLV has ever carried. The satellite was placed into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. This happened roughly 18 minutes after liftoff from the spaceport. Orbit-raising manoeuvres will follow before EOS-05 reaches its final position.
Unlike satellites operating from low earth orbit, EOS-05 aims higher. It will eventually settle around 36,000 kilometres above Earth. At that geosynchronous altitude, it matches Earth’s rotational speed. This allows continuous coverage of the same geographic region. ISRO says the satellite’s health remains fully satisfactory post-launch.
ISRO chairman V Narayanan confirmed the satellite’s systems are functioning well. He noted the solar panel deployed successfully after separation. Narayanan called this the agency’s first successful mission of 2026. The launch followed nearly eight months without a major success. Mission officials described EOS-05 as uniquely configured and highly capable.
Project officials highlighted the satellite’s multi-band operating capabilities. They called it complex in configuration, content and capability. Mission director Thomas Kurien noted its near real-time imaging strength. He confirmed it as the heaviest satellite launched into this orbit type. Such capability positions India among nations with advanced imaging infrastructure.
The GSLV-F17 rocket itself reflects years of incremental improvement. It stands 51.7 metres tall across three stages. Its third stage relies on cryogenic propulsion technology. Liftoff mass reached approximately 420.5 tonnes for this mission. ISRO’s Secretary noted steady gains in structural and propulsion efficiency over time.
This mission also carries symbolic weight for ISRO. It effectively replaces the failed GSLV-F10/EOS-03 mission from 2021. That earlier launch was aborted around 307 seconds into flight. An anomaly in the Cryogenic Upper Stage caused that failure. Friday’s success offers a measure of redemption for the programme.
The path here wasn’t without recent setbacks either. In January, ISRO’s PSLV-C62 mission also faltered. It failed to place 16 satellites into their intended orbit. A critical third-stage anomaly was blamed for that failure. EOS-05’s success arrives as a needed course correction.
Beyond technical achievement, EOS-05 signals a strategic shift. India now possesses a genuine geo-orbit imaging asset. Near real-time data could strengthen agricultural planning and disaster response. Strategic applications remain part of the satellite’s broader utility. For ISRO, this launch reaffirms its long-term geo-imaging ambitions.
