Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 18: In latest news, Sri Lanka suffered a major setback in the first Test against India after experienced batter Dinesh Chandimal was ruled out of the match following a concussion. The 36-year old was injured while fielding on Day 4 at Galle.
As per reports, Chandimal hurt his right shoulder, neck, and head. The injury happened while diving to stop a boundary during India’s second innings. He landed awkwardly and immediately appeared to be in pain. The team’s medical staff attended to him before he was taken to hospital for precautionary scans.
Reports further state that the initial scan showed no signs of internal injury. However, Dinesh Chandimal later failed the concussion assessment and was ruled out for the remainder of the Test. Sri Lanka named 26-year old Pasindu Sooriyabandara as his replacement. It is interesting to mention that this opportunity gave Pasindu his Test debut.
This comes at a difficult time for Sri Lanka. This as they chase a huge target after India established a commanding lead. India scored 462 in their first innings, while Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284, leaving the visitors 178 runs ahead.
India then strengthened their position further in the second innings, with Devdutt Padikkal and Rishabh Pant making important contributions. Eventually, India set Sri Lanka a target of 372 to win the Test, leaving the hosts with a challenging task in the final innings.
