Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 13: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched an interactive cyclone warning system in order to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve public access to critical weather information ahead of the post-monsoon cyclone season.
The web-based Decision Support system (DSS) was officially launched on October 12, 2026. It provides cyclone warnings and marine weather services through a single platform. Users can access it through the IMD and Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre Websites.
Further, the system offers interactive maps displaying observed and forecast cyclone tracks, storm intensity, wind patterns, rainfall, storm surge and rainfall forecasts, for river catchments. It also provides uncertainty cones for cyclone tracks and district wise rainfall warnings. It will help authorities and the public assess potential risks and prepare for severe weather.
IMD Director General of Meteorology Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra chaired the bi-annual Pre-Cyclone Exercise Meeting where the platform was launched.
The meeting, notably, brought together around 230 participants from more than 30 organisations. This included the National Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Response Force, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard and Central Water Commission. Officials reviewed operational challenges and coordination measures for the upcoming season.
