Industry odisha Bureau, Aug 25: IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional ₹300 crore. The funds will support development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology. Gangwal previously donated ₹100 crore in 2022, which supported initial institutional planning efforts substantially.
Under this latest commitment, Gangwal will provide matching grants of up to ₹300 crore. These matching funds will leverage contributions from other donors to support School development efforts. The contribution demonstrates sustained confidence in the medical institution’s strategic vision and long-term mission.
The project envisages a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus property. A proposed 200-bed cancer care and research centre will complement the hospital facility. Both facilities are intended to expand the institute’s role into medical service delivery substantially.
The facilities aim to strengthen medical education, clinical research and healthcare service delivery substantially. The initiative will foster collaboration among doctors, researchers, engineers and technology experts collectively. Such interdisciplinary teamwork could address emerging healthcare challenges through innovative engineering-based solutions effectively.
IIT Kanpur Director Professor Manindra Agrawal said the venture reflects strategic institutional thinking deeply. He recognised that interdisciplinary research combining engineering technology and medicine could transform healthcare delivery. Agrawal noted that Gangwal’s 2022 contribution helped establish the foundational framework for the institution.
The additional ₹300 crore commitment from Gangwal will significantly accelerate realisation of IIT’s vision. Professor Anil K. Lalwani, Dean of the Gangwal School, described the institution’s strategic scope. He said combining medicine, technology and innovation together could create impact well beyond campus.
Such integration of medical education and engineering expertise could foster new approaches to healthcare. The collaboration could enable development of technology-enabled solutions addressing pressing healthcare sector challenges effectively. The medical institution aims to emerge as a centre for advancing healthcare innovation substantially.
Gangwal said he feels honoured and privileged to support this innovative medical education endeavour. The medical school represents a first-of-its-kind institution combining healthcare delivery and technology integration. This additional commitment strengthens IIT Kanpur’s evolving vision of advancing medical education through innovation.
