Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 22: Comcast is preparing job cuts across cable, broadband and wireless, Bloomberg reported. The overhaul follows subscriber losses to streaming and keenly priced fibre and wireless rivals. It aims to free cash for growth.
Comcast is preparing substantial job cuts across its cable-TV, broadband and wireless businesses. Bloomberg reported the plans, citing people familiar with the company’s thinking. The overhaul is meant to strengthen Comcast before it spins off NBCUniversal businesses. That separation is expected next year, the sources said.
The sources asked not to be named because the plans are not yet public. Announcements could begin within weeks, according to the report. Precise timing remains uncertain until Comcast makes a formal announcement. No figure for affected roles has been disclosed.
The reported aim is a more agile workforce and more cash for growth. Other long-term goals also underpin the plan, the report said. Bloomberg did not cite any statement from Comcast on the plans.
Philadelphia-based Comcast has been losing cable-TV customers for a prolonged period. Many households have dropped traditional packages in favour of streaming services. Streaming platforms let viewers watch on demand, often without lengthy contracts. That shift, known as cord-cutting, has eroded a once-dependable revenue base. The decline has made broadband more central to Comcast’s home services.
Yet that business is now under strain too. Comcast has recently been losing broadband customers to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. These rivals are marketing keenly priced fibre-optic and fixed wireless connections. Fibre-optic lines carry data as light signals, supporting very high speeds. Fixed wireless delivers home internet over mobile networks rather than cables.
Comcast has responded with five-year price guarantees on broadband plans. It is also offering a free wireless line for one year. Price locks and bundled mobile service aim to reduce churn, or customer departures.
Comcast has also reshaped its portfolio to lift a lagging share price. Its shares had fallen about 21% this year when Bloomberg published its report. A leaner cost base could help support that effort.
Networks including CNBC and MS NOW were spun off into Versant Media Group in January. That move separated several cable channels from the parent company. That deal is separate from the planned NBCUniversal spin-off. Terms of the NBCUniversal separation were not detailed in the report.
Co-Chief Executive Brian Roberts has reshuffled senior management to tackle subscriber losses. He promoted Steve Croney to chief executive of the broadband and wireless business. Croney’s role places him over the units facing the stiffest competition.
Jon Gieselman, formerly of Apple and DirecTV, joined as chief growth officer. Former finance chief Michael Angelakis is returning to lead Comcast after the NBC separation. The appointments signal a sharper focus on retaining and winning customers.
Comcast employed 179,000 full-time and part-time staff at 31 December 2025. That is the most recent headcount cited in the report. Comcast is due to report quarterly earnings on Thursday. Whether management addresses the reported cuts then remains to be seen. For now, the cuts are a reported plan, not a confirmed decision.
