Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 6: In a bid to reportedly counter China’s global chip supply chain, Donald Trump-led US regime is reportedly expected to impose 15% tariff on products made from polysilicon.
Reports said that, “Such a move by the Trump regime is aimed at protecting the United States of America (USA) from arch rival China’s growing ambitions in the chip supply chain, since polysilicon is the key raw material used in solar panels and semiconductors.”
Reports also hinted that, “Incumbent US President Donald Trump is expected to include in his upcoming official proclamation a 15% tariif on polysilicon derivatives, and minimum import prices on polysilicon, wafers, cells, modules and solar products.”
International media reports had earlier stated that, “The Trump administration was considering a combination of tariffs and price floors to protect domestic producers from low-cost imports.
Reportedly, “China has built a commanding position in the production of polysilicon, wafers, solar cells and modules over the past decade. Thus, it makes China the world’s largest supplier of components used in solar energy projects. The Trump administration views reducing dependence on Chinese supply chains as a strategic priority, particularly for industries linked to clean energy and semiconductor manufacturing. Hence, the tariffs are expected to make imported products more expensive while encouraging investment in US manufacturing capacity.”
Pertinent to quote here reports that, “Since the US Commerce Department has already conducted a year-long national security investigation into polysilicon imports, the vital probe examined whether imports of the material posed risks to US national security by increasing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical technologies. Accordingly, polysilicon is a key input not only for solar panels, but also for semiconductor chips used in electronics, artificial intelligence (AI), defence systems and advanced manufacturing.”
