Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 06: Sourav Ganguly will be taking over as the head coach of Delhi Capitals for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. With this, he will be marking a new chapter in his long association with the franchise.
The former India captain has been part of the Capitals setup since 2019. Also, he has previously worked as Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams. He will now move into the dugout as the franchise’s head coach for the first time.
Ganguly succeeds Hemang Badani, who held the position for the last two IPL seasons. Delhi Capitals have also made wider changes to their coaching setup. Munaf Patel as bowling coach, Venugopal Rao as team director and Ian Bell as assistant coach have not been retained.
The Capitals finished sixth in the 2026 IPL after securing fifth place in the 2025 IPL edition.
Ganguly is expected to finalise a new support team ahead of the upcoming season. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been linked with a possible position in the coaching group, although his appointment has not yet been confirmed.
The new role comes after Ganguly’s first head coaching assignment with Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 last year. Notably, the franchise reached the final under his leadership.
Ganguly, who is also the president of Cricket Association of Bengal, said he was looking forward to working with the Delhi squad and developing a team that plays with confidence.
“Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relation with over the years,” he said. He also added that he will be focusing on developing a “strong and fearless team” for the upcoming IPL season.
