Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 21: India’s core industrial sectors saw growth moderate to 5.4% in July 2026. The previous month’s growth had reached 6%, indicating a slowdown across multiple components. However, July still represented the second-fastest growth rate across the preceding seven months. The data comes from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Index of Core Industries released Thursday.
The broader core-sector picture remained mixed, with significant divergence across India’s industrial basket. Fertilisers contracted sharply while cement and electricity provided relative bright spots. Energy-related sectors continued struggling, while mining sectors showed strength influenced by low bases. The Ministry introduced a new Index of Core Industries series in July 2026.
Fertiliser production declined substantially, contracting 8% in July compared to the prior month. June had recorded a 3.3% contraction, while July 2025 saw 1.9% growth comparatively. The weakness reflected deficient and patchy monsoon conditions affecting agricultural activity nationwide. Lower sowing levels also contributed to reduced demand for fertiliser inputs overall.
The steel sector moderated notably, growing just 2.9% during the July 2026 period. June had registered 5.6% growth, making July the weakest performance in fourteen months. Steel’s slowdown highlighted broader weakness within India’s industrial-production momentum during this period. The moderation contrasted sharply with cement’s strong performance during the same reporting month.
Iron ore maintained relatively robust growth despite decelerating sharply from the previous month. July growth reached 29.5% compared to June’s 44.5%, marking a significant pullback. These elevated growth rates, however, reflected weak year-earlier comparisons requiring careful interpretation. Iron ore had contracted 16.4% in June 2025 and 7.1% in July 2025.
Coal production similarly benefited from a low-base effect during July 2026 measurements. Growth reached 7.6%, marking an eleven-month high in coal-sector performance overall. July 2025 had recorded a 12.3% contraction, creating a favourable comparison point. The low base substantially influenced the apparent strength in this particular sector.
Energy sectors presented a contrasting and concerning picture for India’s overall industrial activity. Natural gas contracted 3.7% while crude oil declined 5.3% during July respectively. Both sectors had contracted continuously across the preceding fourteen months of available data. The persistent contraction highlighted fundamental challenges within India’s energy-production infrastructure and demand.
Refinery products provided one area of improvement within the broader energy-production picture overall. The sector returned to growth after three consecutive months of contractions measured. July’s 2.7% growth represented the refinery sector’s strongest performance in nine months. The improvement offered modest encouragement within an otherwise challenging energy-production environment.
Electricity emerged as one of the relative bright spots in July’s core-sector data. Growth reached 9%, though this moderated from June’s 11.4% growth rate achieved. Cement proved even stronger, recording 13.1% growth representing a seven-month performance high. Cement had grown 11.1% in July 2025, providing meaningful year-on-year momentum comparatively.
The Ministry released a new Index of Core Industries series in July exclusively. Historical comparison under this new series remains possible only through June 2025. Earlier data cannot be directly compared, creating some analytical limitations going forward. The new series reflects updated methodologies and sectoral composition overall.
India’s core industrial sectors displayed uneven momentum as growth moderated from the prior month. Some high growth rates reflected low-base effects rather than structural acceleration in production. Energy-sector weakness and energy-intensive steel contraction offset strength in cement and electricity. The data suggests continued but fragile industrial expansion across India’s economic foundation.
