Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 03: Cristiano Ronaldo turned Portugal from nearly men into champions. He has now left the national camp amid claims of a broken promise. A legend deserved better.
For two decades, Portugal’s football story was largely Cristiano Ronaldo’s story. This week, that story took its most bitter turn.
Ronaldo left the national camp before Thursday’s Nations League game against Denmark. Coach Jorge Jesus had said Ronaldo would not start that match. Days earlier, he sat unused through a 2-1 win over Norway. Ronaldo has promised to tell the Portuguese people the truth in due course. His international future is now uncertain.
The man who changed the map
Before Ronaldo, Portugal had gifted players but little silverware to show for them. He changed that. He made his senior debut as a teenager in 2003. That makes 23 years in the national shirt.
In 2016, he led Portugal to their first major trophy at the European Championship. Injured early in the final, he still drove his teammates from the touchline. Nations League titles followed in 2019 and 2025.
He has scored 146 international goals, more than any man in history. This summer, he captained Portugal at a record sixth World Cup. His fame also turned Portugal into a global football brand. Children from Kolkata to Kinshasa learned of Madeira because of him.
A promise reportedly broken
The details of this week remain disputed. Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, a personal friend of Ronaldo, has given one account.
He says Jesus privately apologised for making Ronaldo warm up without bringing him on. Jesus also reportedly promised to admit the mistake publicly. According to Aguirre, that did not happen, and Ronaldo felt betrayed.
Ronaldo had reportedly considered retiring after the World Cup before being persuaded to stay. If true, persuading a legend to stay, then sidelining him, looks careless.
The coach’s version
Jesus has offered a different account. He insisted there was no “Ronaldo case” at all. He said players understand the coach decides, and Ronaldo had accepted that. He did concede that leaving Ronaldo warming up so long was a mistake.
Coaches must pick on form, and Ronaldo is 41. Few would deny Jesus that right. But how a legend is managed matters as much as whether he starts.
A nation divided
The fallout has been swift. The national team’s official profile reportedly lost around 500,000 followers within hours. Portuguese media say Prime Minister Luís Montenegro sought a meeting with Jesus. Rafael Leão inherited the No 7 shirt against Denmark.
A stain he did not earn
Portugal must eventually build a future without Ronaldo. That transition was always going to be painful. It did not need to be humiliating.
A man who gave Portugal 23 years deserved honesty, in private and in public. Whatever truth he eventually tells, his place in history is secure. The manner of this exit is a stain he did not earn.
The man who changed the map:
He has scored 146 international goals, more than any man in history. Age did not slow him much. Between the 2022 World Cup and late 2025, he scored 25 goals in 30 games. This summer, he captained Portugal at a record sixth World Cup. His fame also turned Portugal into a global football brand. Children from Kolkata to Kinshasa learned of Madeira because of him.
