Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 08: India’s EV retail sales reached 2,98,448 units in August. Sales grew 52.9 per cent year-on-year, FADA reported. Overall EV penetration climbed to 12.3 per cent. Penetration stood at 9.5 per cent a year earlier.
FADA described August as electric mobility’s strongest August yet. All four major EV categories set fresh August records. Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations released this retail sales data. FADA President Sai Giridhar provided detailed category-level commentary.
Electric two-wheelers supplied the largest share of volume. Sales reached 1,83,204 units, up from 1,09,673 units. This represented 67.05 per cent year-on-year growth. Two-wheelers now account for over 60 per cent of EV retail.
Two-wheeler penetration stayed above 10 per cent throughout August. This occurred despite August being a seasonally soft month. FADA noted the absence of festive-season demand support. Sustained penetration during such months indicates steady underlying adoption.
Electric passenger vehicle sales rose to 30,696 units. This compares with 20,210 units sold in August 2025. Growth measured approximately 52 per cent year-on-year, FADA said. Passenger EV penetration reached 7.6 per cent of the segment.
Electric three-wheelers recorded 79,846 units in retail sales. That marks growth of 25.28 per cent from last year. Three-wheelers showed unusually deep electrification within their category. Penetration reached 65.3 per cent, FADA reported separately.
This distinguishes three-wheelers from other EV categories meaningfully. Their electric penetration far exceeds two-wheelers or passenger vehicles. Three-wheelers remain what FADA called structurally electric already.
Electric commercial vehicles delivered the sharpest percentage expansion. Sales reached 4,702 units, nearly tripling last year’s 1,631. FADA called this an all-time monthly high for CVs. The category grew fastest despite carrying the smallest base.
These four categories reveal sharply different electrification patterns. Two-wheelers dominate absolute volume within India’s EV market. Three-wheelers show the deepest penetration proportionally within their segment. Commercial vehicles are expanding rapidly from limited existing adoption.
Penetration growth carries separate significance beyond raw sales numbers. The 2.8 percentage-point increase reflects EVs gaining broader market share. This occurred alongside strong absolute sales growth across categories.
India’s electric mobility market is not advancing uniformly. Different vehicle segments are electrifying at markedly different speeds. August’s record numbers mask this underlying category divergence. Whether uniform acceleration follows remains an open market question.
