Akasa Air is planning its fleet on an increasingly long horizon. For the airline, the question is less today’s fleet than tomorrow’s supply. Its aircraft pipeline could soon stretch beyond 2032.
That prospect rests on talks for more than 200 Boeing 737 MAX jets. Bloomberg reported the discussions, citing people familiar with the matter.
Akasa Air Boeing Order Talks Extend Fleet Horizon
The potential order remains under discussion rather than confirmed. No purchase agreement has been reported as signed.
Akasa, described in the report as India’s third-largest airline, wants deliveries into the next decade. It also aims to expand within India’s growing air travel market. A fresh Boeing aircraft order would support that long-term fleet planning.
183 Unfilled Orders Already in the Aircraft Orderbook
The airline is not starting from an empty orderbook. Akasa already holds unfilled orders for 183 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Those jets are scheduled for delivery over the next decade.
Its current operating fleet stands at 43 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Akasa has built that fleet since beginning operations in 2022. The proposed order would therefore extend an already substantial delivery pipeline.
Decision Timeline: Early Next Year, Terms in 2027
The talks still face two distinct milestones. A decision on the potential order is expected early next year. Contract terms could then be finalised in the second half of 2027.
Neither date is certain. A decision would not mean terms had been agreed. The timetable also leaves room for negotiations to evolve.
30% Capacity Increase Targeted by March 2027
Nearer-term growth follows a separate track. Akasa is targeting a 30% capacity increase by March 2027. That goal concerns capacity, not passenger numbers or revenue.
The capacity boost and the Boeing talks operate on different timescales. One addresses the coming months. The other shapes airline growth well into the 2030s. India’s growing air travel market provides the broader backdrop for both.
Boeing 737 MAX Strategy Deepens
Akasa’s operating fleet and existing backlog both consist of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. A further purchase would deepen its reliance on this narrow-body jet. The stated aim is securing aircraft deliveries into the next decade.
Aviation Financing Considered Separately
Akasa is also weighing a separate financing option. Its chief financial officer said in June it could join a government scheme. That is the emergency credit guarantee scheme.
Participation remains under consideration. No link between the scheme and the Boeing talks has been established.
Three Layers of Fleet Planning
Akasa Air’s fleet strategy now spans three layers. It operates 43 Boeing 737 MAX jets today. Another 183 remain on unfilled orders.
A possible 200-plus purchase could carry fleet expansion beyond 2032. Until a decision and final terms arrive, that third layer stays provisional.
