Industry Odisha Bureau, Sept 25: Twelve years after the launch of ‘Make in India,’ India’s technology and electronics manufacturing sector is moving beyond basic assembly. According to senior industry executives, we are going towards deeper localisation, domestic research and development, and globally competitive production.
The initiative was launched on September 25, 2014 with an aim to position India as a global hub for manufacturing, design and innovation. Under Make in India 2.0, the programme now covers 27 sectors. These include 15 manufacturing and 12 services sectors.
Electronics Manufacturing Expands
India’s electronics production has grown nearly sevenfold, from around 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26. Mobile phone production rose around 32 times, from Rs 18,900 crore to Rs 6.3 lakh crore.
CP PLUS MD Aditya Khemka said companies are increasingly moving beyond assembly towards backward integration and stronger domestic technology ecosystems. Its Kadapa facility produces more than 2.5 million devices a month.
BenQ India and South Asia MD Rajeev Singh said the focus is shifting towards capability and supply chain resilience. He said half of BenQ’s interactive flat panel business comes from products made in India. Overall localisation is expected to rise from 25% to nearly 40% over the next two years.
Policy support drives next phase
Government schemes including the Production linked Incentive (PLI), Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) and semiconductor programme have supported domestic manufacturing.
As of June 2026, PLI schemes across 14 sectors had attracted Rs 2.6 lakh crore in investment and generated Rs 23.8 lakh crore in production and sales. Government data shows that they also supported more than Rs 15.5 lakh crore in exports and 14.6 lakh jobs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also marked the 12th anniversary of ‘Make in India’ on Friday, highlighting increased manufacturing.
