Water availability can shape almost every part of rural life, from farming and food security to household needs and local incomes. In Kalahandi, efforts to improve access to water are helping communities make better use of land and build greater resilience through the year.
Through Project Sangam, Vedanta Aluminium is developing water conservation and watershed assets across villages around its Lanjigarh operations. The initiative has created multiple water conservation structures across 41 villages, helping improve groundwater recharge and increase local water storage.
The impact extends across more than 3,500 acres of land, where improved irrigation is supporting agricultural activity. The initiative is also helping ensure access to water for more than 22,000 people for drinking and farming needs.
Making Water Available Beyond the Monsoon
Reliable water access can make a significant difference in areas where agriculture has traditionally depended heavily on rainfall. By improving water storage and groundwater recharge, Project Sangam is helping communities retain water for longer periods.
The approach focuses on creating water assets that can support communities beyond the immediate monsoon season. This can provide farmers with greater flexibility in planning crops and reduce their dependence on uncertain rainfall.
The effort is particularly relevant in Kalahandi, a district that has historically faced periods of drought and water scarcity. Improved local water infrastructure is helping create conditions for more consistent agricultural activity.
Linking Water Security With Rural Development
Project Sangam goes beyond water conservation. Better access to irrigation can create opportunities for farmers to improve cultivation practices, increase productivity and explore more efficient ways of using available resources.
The initiative is therefore linking water security in Kalahandi with broader livelihood development. As access to irrigation improves, farmers can make more informed decisions about crops and agricultural practices.
The approach also supports greater resilience against changing weather patterns. More dependable water availability can help communities manage periods of irregular rainfall and reduce some of the risks associated with climate variability.
By combining watershed development with livelihood support, Vedanta Aluminium Lanjigarh is helping strengthen the foundations of rural development in Kalahandi.
Project Sangam’s work across 41 villages shows how investments in local water infrastructure can have an impact far beyond water itself. Better water availability can support farming, improve food security and create more stable conditions for rural communities to build their livelihoods.
