Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 18: The temporary coach runs on selected days from October 22 to mid-January 2027. It offers views of the Sengottai–Punalur ghat section and Aryankavu Pass. Fares start at ₹515, with the end-to-end journey priced at ₹1,875.
Southern Railway has added an Executive Vistadome AC coach to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express. The move aims to give passengers wide views of the Western Ghats. The railway zone announced the arrangement on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The coach will run on a temporary basis from October 22 until mid-January. It is an additional coach on an existing train, not a new service. Southern Railway said the train already draws strong patronage.
The main attraction is the Sengottai–Punalur ghat section of the Western Ghats. This mountain stretch links Tamil Nadu with Kerala. The route also crosses Aryankavu Pass, a natural gap in the mountain range. Southern Railway highlighted the pass as a key scenic point.
From Madurai, the coach will run on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The first such departure is on October 22, 2026. The last is scheduled for January 15, 2027.
In the return direction, operations follow a different pattern. Journeys from Guruvayur will carry the coach on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. These begin on October 23, 2026, and end on January 16, 2027. Passengers will need to check which days apply to their direction of travel.
According to Southern Railway, bookings are now open. The basic Executive Vistadome fare is ₹515. A full end-to-end journey costs ₹1,875. The lower figure is a basic fare, not the cost of the complete trip.
The Madurai-Guruvayur Express links Madurai in Tamil Nadu with Kerala’s temple town of Guruvayur. Both cities draw pilgrims and leisure travellers throughout the year. Adding a scenic coach could widen the train’s appeal without new infrastructure.
Vistadome coaches are designed to make the journey itself part of the trip. Such coaches are built to improve passengers’ view of the passing landscape. Southern Railway said travellers could enjoy green landscapes and mountain views in comfort. It presented the offer as pairing rail convenience with the region’s natural beauty.
The service could encourage more leisure travel between the two states. Towns along the ghat route may attract greater visitor interest. Local hotels, guides and eateries could benefit if demand materialises. However, no such gains have yet been recorded.
The temporary schedule spans the year-end holiday travel season. Demand in these months may show how much passengers will pay for scenery. Open bookings do not, by themselves, guarantee strong occupancy on every departure. Pricing will also matter for budget-conscious families and younger travellers.
Indian Railways has deployed Vistadome coaches on several scenic routes in recent years. This model lets existing trains serve tourists without dedicated new services. Punctual running and consistent service quality remain central to that approach.
Southern Railway has not said whether the arrangement will continue beyond January. Passenger uptake over the next three months is likely to shape any future decision. The service will test whether a regular interstate train can also attract tourists.
