Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 18: JSW Steel has won a major legal reprieve in Odisha. The Odisha High Court has quashed a Rs 696.32 crore demand against the steelmaker. It also set aside a second claim of Rs 1,472.69 crore. Together, the two demands added up to nearly Rs 2,169 crore.
Both claims related to dispatch shortfalls at the Jajang iron ore block. The company revealed the rulings in a regulatory disclosure on Sunday. The court delivered both verdicts on October 16.
Why the ruling matters
The verdicts ease a sizeable financial overhang for one of India’s largest steelmakers. Investors may finally get relief from a dispute that has lingered since 2021. Captive iron ore mines are central to a steelmaker’s cost control. Penalties tied to production commitments can quickly erode that advantage. The outcome could also shape how similar disputes play out across the sector.
The FY21 demand
The first demand covered the opening year of the mining agreement. That period ran from June 27, 2020, to June 26, 2021. The Joint Director of Mines, Joda, raised the claim in September 2021. Authorities had flagged a shortfall in mineral dispatch from the block.
The court decided the case in line with its April 20, 2026, ruling. That earlier verdict had dealt with a separate petition and connected matters. JSW Steel says the demand letter of September 6, 2021, now stands quashed. A corrigendum issued a day later also falls, the company added.
The FY25 claim
The larger demand concerns the fifth year of the agreement. That year spanned June 27, 2024, to June 26, 2025. The Deputy Director of Mines, Joda, issued the demand on August 21, 2025. It was raised under Rule 12-A of the 2016 mineral concession rules.
The High Court has not scrapped this claim outright. Instead, it has sent the matter back to the authority for a fresh decision. The authority must now apply the legal position set in the April judgment.
What lies ahead
The fate of the FY25 demand now rests with the mining authority. If it follows the April ruling, the steelmaker may see further relief. JSW Steel had moved court in both cases, seeking to quash the demands. The company said it delayed the disclosure to study the judgments closely.
For now, the Odisha High Court has handed JSW Steel a significant legal win.
