Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 10: Odisha has turned to global crop science to reshape its farm sector. Sachin Ramachandra Jadhav led a state delegation to ICRISAT headquarters from October 7 to 9. Jadhav is Secretary of Odisha’s Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment. ICRISAT is the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics.
Jadhav himself comes from a farming background. That gives him a firm grasp of the challenges farmers face on the ground. The visit sought to bring ICRISAT’s scientific strength to Odisha’s current and future farm programmes.
Jadhav held talks with ICRISAT’s leadership and senior scientists. They reviewed ongoing joint projects in the state. Discussions focused on sustainable cropping systems and better crop yields. Building climate resilience among smallholder farmers was another key theme.
The team toured experimental fields across the research campus. They saw high yielding pigeonpea hybrids and speed breeding methods in action. Trials on groundnut, sorghum and climate-resilient millets were also on show. Jadhav also visited ICRISAT’s Living Lab. It showcases tech driven solutions and modern field management practices.
Officials expect the tie up to boost Odisha’s crop diversification drive. It should also strengthen climate smart agriculture and dryland farming in the state. The larger goal is to carry research from the lab straight to farmers’ fields.
