The 20th Asian Games opened in Nagoya on Saturday. Emperor Naruhito declared the Asian Games 2026 open at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. The ceremony followed a buildup marked by complaints. Athletes and officials had raised concerns about accommodation and transport. Japan welcomed fans five years after the Tokyo Olympics played out at empty venues.
Nagoya Asian Games Open With Colour and Fireworks
The Asian Games opening ceremony began quietly. Classical music and dance filled a heart-shaped stage. Then came the parade of 45 nations and regions. Emperor Naruhito watched alongside IOC president Kirsty Coventry. A heavy security operation accompanied the royal visit. Organisers had said up to 10,000 police would be deployed.
Shigenobu Murofushi and his son Koji jointly lit the cauldron. Both are former Asian Games hammer-throw champions.
The mood lifted later. Dancers in boiler suits marked Nagoya’s manufacturing heritage. Fireworks closed the night. The theme was Harmonic Heart Beat. Organisers intended it to convey Asian solidarity.
Asian Games Logistics Draw Athlete Complaints
Several delegations reported accommodation problems. Complaints included mix-ups and double-bookings. Delegations also lamented long registration waits on arrival. Some buses reportedly arrived late. Others reportedly took athletes to the wrong venues.
The Olympic Council of Asia acknowledged the problems. It played them down as “teething difficulties”. These are reported complaints, not an assessment of the Games overall.
No Traditional Asian Games Village
Organisers did not build a dedicated Games village. The approach was a cost-cutting measure. Athletes and officials instead stay in hotels, temporary wooden containers and a cruise ship. The ship is docked in the bay.
South Korea said the containers at Garden Pier were too cramped for its basketballers. India’s cricket board arranged separate hotel rooms for the men’s team. It cited a tight bed allocation from organisers.
More Than 11,000 Athletes Begin Competition
More than 11,000 athletes will contest 369 gold medals. The programme spans 43 sports. Basketball, football and other events have already started. The first gold medal is expected on Sunday. Triathlon is likely to provide it.
Swimming also begins on Sunday in Tokyo. The swimming programme features Pan Zhanle and Yu Zidi. Pan is the 100 metres freestyle world-record holder.
A few incidents also surfaced. Taiwan’s delegation briefly refused to join Friday’s welcoming ceremony. Sports minister Lee Yang had been blocked from attending. South Korea’s men’s hockey team was upset before a match. North Korea’s anthem played instead of their own.
Asian Games Mix Tradition With New Sports
The programme blends Olympic sports with regional favourites. Kabaddi and sepak takraw remain on the schedule. Esports awards medals again after its Hangzhou debut. Teqball makes its first Asian Games appearance. It combines elements of football and table tennis. Virtual taekwondo also debuts.
Nagoya 2026 Turns Focus to Competition
The ceremony formally shifted attention towards competition. Operational pressures nevertheless remain part of the early backdrop. The Games now move from preparation to sport.
