An Iranian official has informed that a suspected oil spill in the Gulf near Iran’s Kharg Island was likely caused by a tanker dumping wastewater and not a leak from oil facilities.
Satellite images showed the oil spill covering dozens of square kilometres of sea near Kharg Island.
The tiny island has been under lens since the onset of US-Iran war. So, why is this island crucial for Iran, US and the rest of the world? Let’s find out…
What is Kharg Island?
A small island in the Persian Gulf, Kharg island is located about 25 km off Iran’s coast. Believed to be one of the most strategically important energy hubs in the world, it serves as Iran’s main oil export terminal. Nearly 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports pass through Kharg Island. Oil from major Iranian fields is transported through pipelines to the island, where it is stored and loaded onto giant tankers headed mainly towards Asian markets such as China and India.
Its history
Kharg Island has historically been one of the most strategically important islands in the Persian Gulf. In ancient times, it served as a maritime trading point connecting Persia with India and the Arabian Peninsula. Archaeological remains, including early Christian monasteries, highlight its historical commercial and cultural significance.
During the 18th century, the Dutch briefly occupied the island to expand their Gulf trade influence before Persian rulers regained control.
Kharg’s global importance surged in the 20th century with the rise of Iran’s oil industry. Its deep-water facilities made it the ideal terminal for exporting crude oil, and it soon became Iran’s main oil export hub.
The island gained major geopolitical attention during the Iran–Iraq War, when Iraq repeatedly bombed it in the ‘Tanker War’ to cripple Iran’s economy. Despite heavy attacks, Iran continued exports.
Why is Kharg Island considered so important?
As the island lies close to the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil trade passes, any disruption near the island can affect international energy supplies, trigger spikes in oil prices, and fuel inflation worldwide.
For the US, Kharg represents strategic leverage over Iran because targeting or sanctioning the island can pressure Tehran economically. For Iran, however, protecting Kharg is essential for economic survival and national security. In many ways, this tiny island has become a symbol of how global politics and energy security are deeply interconnected.
Why does Kharg island matter to the world?
The island’s importance is amplified by its location near the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s busiest and most sensitive maritime chokepoints. A large share of global oil shipments travels through these waters every day. If tensions escalate around Kharg Island, shipping routes can become risky, insurance costs for tankers can rise, and energy-importing nations may face supply shocks.
For countries such as India, China, Japan, and many European economies, stability around Kharg is directly linked to economic stability at home. Rising oil prices influence transport costs, inflation, manufacturing, and household expenses across the world.
Is the US eyeing Kharg island?
There is growing speculation that the United States is closely eyeing Kharg Island because of its immense strategic importance to Iran’s economy and oil exports. Recent reports suggest that US military planners and policymakers view the island as a major pressure point in the ongoing Gulf tensions.
Reports indicate that the US has already carried out strikes on military infrastructure around the island while deliberately avoiding major oil facilities to prevent global energy shock.
However, analysts warn that any direct attempt to capture or heavily damage Kharg Island could sharply escalate the conflict, disrupt global oil markets, and trigger wider regional retaliation. For Washington, Kharg is both a strategic opportunity and a high-risk gamble.
