Industry Odisha Bureau, May 10: Amid the fragile-ceasefire-ridden ongoing tug of war between sworn enemies US-Israel and Iran, satellite images have reportedly shown substantial amount of suspected oil spill near Iran’s Kharg Island that is well-known to be the Islamic Republic’s crude oil export hub.
As per international media reports, “The likely spill appearing as a grey and white slick on images is covering an area of 45 square kilometres of the sea waters to the west of the 8 kms (5 miles) long Kharg Island.”
It has also been reported, “The likely oil spill is the largest to occur since the breaking out of intense conflicts between the US-Israel and Iran defence forces since February 28 this year.”
It has further been reported by the international media, “The pictures have been shown on May 6-8 from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites of Euporean Union Space Programme Agency (ESA)’s Copernicus.”
Reportedly, 90 per cent of Iran’s crude oil exports, especially to China’s ports, are done from this oil export hub at Kharg Island.
The real cause behind the suspected oil spill is yet to be ascertained by competent authorities and agencies except the satellite imagery
