Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 10: The Ministry of Power and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi addressed a Curtain Raiser event today. The session previewed the Small Hydro Power track at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026.
Sarangi highlighted small hydropower’s unique role in India’s clean energy transition. He invited industry stakeholders to participate widely in the upcoming summit.
Clearance Delays Remain a Key Bottleneck
The Secretary flagged long project lead times as the sector’s biggest challenge. Forest, environmental, and right-of-way clearances continue to delay execution timelines significantly.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has promised faster approvals for small hydropower projects. Even so, Sarangi called for an automated alert system to flag procedural delays early.
Bankability and Long-Term Capital in Focus
Sarangi stressed improving the bankability of small hydropower projects for investors. Their distinct cash-flow patterns demand access to patient, long-term capital.
He urged IREDA to coordinate with commercial banks and multilateral lenders. Institutions like the Asian Development Bank and World Bank could boost funding.
Call for Industry Input
Sarangi closed by inviting industry representatives, researchers, and officials to contribute ideas. Their inputs will help shape stronger renewable energy policy nationwide.
