Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 13: Nayara Energy exported 1.20 lakh tonnes of petrol to Russia in August. The shipment, worth $90 million, came from its Vadinar refinery. Rosneft, its part-owner, bought the fuel.
Nayara Ships Petrol Worth $90 Million
Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy exported roughly 1.20 lakh tonnes of petrol to Russia during August 2026. The shipment was valued at around $90 million. It originated from Nayara’s refinery at Vadinar in Gujarat. The exports came amid an unusual surge in Russian fuel imports.
India Supplies Most of Russia’s Fuel Imports
Moscow imported around $132 million worth of refined petroleum products last month. India supplied roughly 70 per cent of that value. That amounted to approximately $92.5 million, according to CREA. Separately, India supplied 94 per cent of Russia’s gasoline imports. CREA reported 120,000 tonnes of gasoline, valued at €78 million. All of it was loaded at Vadinar and bought by Rosneft.
Rosneft Links Russian Crude With Vadinar
Rosneft holds a 49.13 per cent stake in Nayara Energy. Vadinar sourced 100 per cent of its crude from Russia during the first eight months of 2026. That compares with 81 per cent across all of 2025, CREA said. Russian crude therefore entered Vadinar before returning as refined fuel.
Russia’s Fuel Imports Surge Sharply
Russia imported 172,000 tonnes of oil products during August, worth €114 million. That volume exceeded the previous monthly high more than sevenfold, CREA said. It was also triple Russia’s total oil-product imports across 2025. Gasoline made up 74 per cent of August’s imports. Between 2023 and 2025, gasoline accounted for just 6 per cent, according to the report.
Cargoes Move Through Egypt
Each cargo underwent a ship-to-ship transfer, CREA reported. This took place at the Damietta Lightering Zone off Egypt. Cargoes then unloaded at Russia’s Arctic port of Beloye More. CREA noted Russia typically imports small refined-product volumes. Seaborne imports averaged under 5,000 tonnes monthly between 2023 and 2025. No cargoes arrived during 13 of those 36 months.
Domestic Shortages Drive Demand
Ukrainian drone strikes have repeatedly targeted Russian energy infrastructure, CREA noted. This has contributed to domestic fuel shortages in Russia. Most of Russia’s other oil-product imports came from South Korea. Those shipments supplied Pacific ports difficult to reach otherwise.
India’s Russian Crude Imports Decline
India’s overall Russian crude shipments fell 24 per cent month-on-month in August. This followed two consecutive months of record-high imports. Jamnagar’s imports fell 15 per cent. Vadinar’s imports rose 5 per cent, while Paradip’s edged up 1 per cent. IndianOil’s Vadinar SMPL installation saw imports drop 48 per cent from July. HMEL’s Mundra terminal recorded a 34 per cent decline.
The data shows Russian crude flowing into Vadinar even as India’s broader Russian crude intake eased, while refined fuel moved back toward Russia amid its domestic supply pressures.
