Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 1: In Odisha, Jharsuguda recorded highest exports of US$ 3,738.8 million in FY 2025-26, accounting for 34.6% of Odisha’s exports, according to a report.
Odisha’s merchandise exports stood at US$ 10.8 billion in FY 2025-26, constituting 2.4% of India’s exports for the year. Exports witnessed a year-over-year growth of 7.0% over FY 2024-25. During FY 2016-17 through FY 2025-26, Odisha’s exports registered a CAGR of 6.6%.
Over the past decade, the composition of Odisha’s export basket has remained largely unchanged, with exports heavily concentrated in metal and mineral products.
In FY 2025-26, Odisha’s top exported category was aluminium and its articles, accounting for 38.2% of total exports, followed by iron and steel; inorganic chemicals; ores, slag and ash; and mineral fuels and oils.
While Jharsuguda recorded highest exports, the other top exporting districts were Jagatsinghapur, Jajpur, Sundargarh, and Angul.
Notably, exports in Odisha are highly concentrated among a few districts, with 15 out of 30 districts accounting for 98.9% of Odisha’s exports in FY 2025-26.
Regarding export destinations, China was the top export destination in FY 2025-26, with exports at US$ 1,973.8 million (18.3% of Odisha’s exports). Other major export destinations were Vietnam, South Korea, the United States of America (USA), and the United Kingdom (UK).
Under the base case scenario, assuming Odisha’s exports grow at the same CAGR during the next four years as during 2019-20 to 2025-26, Odisha’s exports are estimated to reach USD 14.9 billion by 2029-30.
In the optimistic scenario, if Odisha’s exports grow at the same envisaged CAGR during 2025-26 to 2029-30 as India’s (22.7%), for achieving USD 1 trillion merchandise exports by 2029-30, Odisha’s exports may reach USD 24.4 billion by FY 2029-30.
While Odisha’s exports peaked at US$ 17.1 billion in FY 2021-22, it was largely driven by elevated commodity prices and strong post-pandemic demand.
However, the State’s heavy reliance on minerals and metals makes its export performance vulnerable to fluctuations in global commodity markets.
As per, the ambitious scenario, if India achieves USD 1 trillion export target by 2029-30 and Odisha’s share in India’s exports more than doubles to 5.0 percent from the current share of 2.4 percent, Odisha’s exports may reach USD 50 billion by 2029-30, the study said.
Over the past decade, the composition of Odisha’s export basket has remained largely unchanged, with exports heavily concentrated in metal and mineral products.
Odisha has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing State economies. In FY 2025–26, Odisha’s GSDP was estimated at Rs 9.9 trillion and grew at a rate of 9.5% year-on-year, reflecting strong economic momentum.
Notably, the State outpaced the national growth rate of 7.7% during the same period.
Odisha’s sustained investments and supportive industrial policies are helping build new strengths in sectors such as food and seafood processing, petrochemicals, automobile, and auto-components, tourism and hospitality, among others, an economist said.
With nearly 67% of India’s titanium reserves and abundant deposits of other minerals, Odisha is well positioned to develop aerospace-grade manufacturing capabilities.
To boost exports, the State may develop a Defence and Aerospace Corridor through a multi-node approach that integrates raw materials, manufacturing, innovation, testing, and export infrastructure, the economist said.
To boost marine exports, the State may focus on strengthening the entire value chain from resource mapping and production to processing, logistics, and market access. Investments in cold-chain infrastructure and export logistics will be critical for supporting the growth of marine exports, he said.
Going forward, Odisha may focus on developing integrated semiconductor clusters to strengthen supply-chain resilience, enable faster product commercialisation and position the State as a globally competitive semiconductor hub.
