Industry Odisha Bureau ,Aug 4 : India’s commercial aviation market has entered a phase of turbulent transformation. With airline fleets expanding faster than at any point in the country’s history, the underlying engineering challenge has become acute: maintaining safety oversight across an increasingly complex operational landscape.
That complexity is now visible in the data. Between January and June this year, Indian airlines reported 352 significant technical defects 334 of them on domestic operations. The figures matter less for their absolute magnitude than for what they reveal about the sector’s maturing oversight culture. Rising defect reporting can signal strengthened regulatory attention and improved safety reporting systems, yet it also exposes maintenance infrastructure under strain.
The trend has been unmistakable. In 2023, the sector recorded 487 significant defects. By 2025, that number had nearly doubled to 889. The first half of 2026 appears to sustain this trajectory. Some of the steepest increases have occurred at newer carriers: Akasa Air, launched in 2023, reported 152 defects in just six months, reflecting both rapid fleet deployment and the intensive maintenance cycle required during an airline’s formation phase.
The regulatory response has evolved correspondingly. Since early 2024, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued 382 show-cause notices to airlines for safety violations, backed by enforcement powers ranging from financial penalties to suspension of operating approvals. Between 2023 and 2025 alone, the DGCA took 51 formal enforcement actions.
This intensification of oversight accelerated visibly after June 12, when Air India Flight 171 crashed during takeoff, killing 241 of 242 people aboard India’s deadliest aviation accident in three decades. The disaster prompted special safety audits at major airports, signaling that India’s regulatory framework was recalibrating in real time.
The challenge ahead is not whether India can regulate safety, but whether its maintenance infrastructure, engineering capacity, and inspector workforce can keep pace with fleet expansion. The next phase could involve substantially expanding the country’s maintenance, repair and overhaul ecosystem, accelerating investment in predictive maintenance technologies, and deepening collaboration between regulators, airlines, and international safety bodies. India’s ambition to become a global aviation hub depends on treating safety oversight not as a constraint on growth, but as infrastructure for it.
