Industry Odisha Bureau, April 15: The incumbent NDA Government at the Centre, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi (BJP), is all set to move The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill during the three-day Special Parliament Session from upcoming April 16 to 18 proposing for a remarkable reconstitution of the Lok Sabha (Lower House) with an augmentation of its seats to 850 from the existing 543.
The Bill also proposes a cap of 815 on the number of Lok Sabha Members elected directly by the bona fide voters of India from the respective parliamentary constituencies from the currently existing 28 states, while not more than 35 members to represent the eight (08) Union Territories (UTs).
Apart from this, the afore-mentioned Bill also proposes an amendment to Article 82 of the Constitution that governs delimitation after each Census paving path for readjustment of the constituencies in accordance with the 2026-27 Census data.
Such a significant move by the Union Government has also linked the implementation of the much-sought-after 33 per cent Women’s Reservation Act under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam-2023 both in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies from the 2029 General Eleactions.
Notably, the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act-2023 has already mandated the delimitation after the 2026-27 Census and has simultaneously linked the 33 percent Women’s Reservation Act to the constituency readjustment.
