Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 14: HDFC Bank has sent two names to RBI for its top job. Deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha is the internal candidate. The external nominee’s identity remains unconfirmed.
HDFC Bank has submitted two candidates to the Reserve Bank of India. Deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha is the internal nominee. The second candidate comes from outside the bank. That external nominee’s identity could not be independently confirmed.
HDFC Bank CEO Search Reaches RBI
The bank’s search began with more than 150 applications. Around 50 candidates were shortlisted from that pool. Fewer than 10 bankers were eventually interviewed. The final external shortlist included Anup Bagchi and K Balasubramanian. Both emerged as strong contenders during the closing stages.
Bharucha Faces RBI Tenure Question
HDFC Bank has sought roughly six months of tenure relaxation from RBI. The request would let Bharucha, if selected, complete a full three-year term. Without it, he would otherwise hit the regulatory tenure ceiling mid-term. RBI caps continuous tenure for such roles at 15 years. Bharucha would reach that ceiling in June 2029. Whether RBI grants the relaxation remains unresolved.
Bharucha Offers Institutional Continuity
Bharucha has been with HDFC Bank since 1995. He joined its board as executive director in June 2014. He currently oversees a large share of the bank’s asset franchise. This includes retail assets, mortgages and corporate banking. It also covers emerging corporates, business banking and rural lending. His candidacy comes as the bank continues integrating erstwhile HDFC Ltd.
Bagchi and Balasubramanian Led External Race
Bagchi, 55, has spent more than three decades with the ICICI Group. His experience spans retail banking, MSME, rural and corporate banking. It also includes treasury, markets, credit policy and digital channels. He previously headed ICICI Securities and has led ICICI Prudential Life since 2023.
Balasubramanian brings a more corporate and institutional banking-focused profile. He briefly worked at HDFC Bank during 2016-17, heading corporate banking and government business. He now serves as Citi India CEO, also overseeing banking for the Indian subcontinent.
Neither has been confirmed as the external nominee submitted to RBI.
Leadership Transition Comes During HDFC Integration
Whoever is eventually approved will inherit a large, complex banking franchise. The succession coincides with the bank’s continuing integration of erstwhile HDFC Ltd. That backdrop adds weight to the choice between continuity and outside experience. HDFC Bank did not respond to queries on the matter.
The process now moves largely into regulatory hands. Key questions remain open: the external nominee’s identity, RBI’s view on Bharucha’s tenure request, and eventual approval of either candidate.
