Industry Odisha Bureau, Jul 31: The Government of India (GoI) has reportedly entrusted state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) with the responsibility of manufacturing the country’s first and fully indigenous fast chargers of 350 kilowatt (KW) capability meant for long-haul and large commercial electric vehicles (EVs).
Media reports, citing BHEL’s annual report of fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26), have stated that, “BHEL has aleady manufactured 60 KW and 122 KW chargers being used by large cars and sports utility vehicles (SUVs), while the higher capacity chargers, i.e. over 240 KW, are preferred to rapidly charge electric trucks and buses.”
Media reports, citing the parliamentary reply of Ministry of Heavy Industries (MoHI) dated April 2, 2024, have also stated that, “BHEL has already supplied and installed EV charging stations on highways equipped with 15 KW Bharat DC chargers and 3.3 KW AC chargers, but they are lower in capacity than the 240–360 KW chargers necessary for running electric buses and trucks.”
Media reports, quoting opinions of experts, have claimed that, “BHEL’s successfully manufacturing of the tasked indigenous 360 KW fast charger would label it as the first ever Indian company to do so.”
