Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 12: Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 at its Surprise and Shine event. The launch also included Apple Watch Ultra 4, AirPods 5 and new iPhones. At first glance, Series 12 looks remarkably similar to Series 11.
Apple has introduced meaningful changes beneath that familiar exterior. These touch processing power, materials and health tracking. The central question is whether they justify an upgrade.
Same Price, Broader Choices
Series 12 keeps Series 11’s pricing structure intact. The 42mm aluminium model starts at $399. The 46mm version costs $449.
Titanium models start at $699 for 42mm and $749 for 46mm. Ceramic returns as an option, starting at $899 for 42mm and $949 for 46mm.
In India, Series 12 starts at ₹56,900. It is available for preorder, with sales beginning September 18.
Familiar Design, Stronger Protection
There is no major visual redesign this year. Series 12 retains the familiar OLED Retina display. It stays always-on, with peak brightness up to 2,000 nits.
The aluminium model gets a durability upgrade instead. Apple replaced Ion-X glass with Ceramic Shield 2. Apple says the new material is 60% tougher.
Series 12 remains available in aluminium, titanium and ceramic finishes. This broadens material choice compared with a single-tier lineup.
S11 Brings the Bigger Internal Change
Series 11 runs on Apple’s S10 chip. Series 12 introduces the newer S11 chip instead. This processor reportedly enables new health and audio features.
The S11’s significance may lie in enabled functionality rather than raw speed. Series 12 also reportedly carries 4GB of RAM. Series 11 reportedly has 2GB, though Apple has not confirmed this officially.
Both models retain 64GB of storage. This remains an area of continuity between generations.
Health and Charging Matter More Than Appearance
Apple positions Series 12 as its most advanced health companion yet. The upgraded chip supports several new health-tracking capabilities. Charging also reportedly improved, though specific figures remain unconfirmed.
This generation’s value lies mostly in internal capability rather than outward change.
Should Series 11 Owners Upgrade?
Series 11 owners already have a modern design and strong display. They also have 64GB storage and a capable S10 chip.
Series 12’s improvements are real but incremental for these users. The upgrade matters most if specific health features appeal personally. Durability-conscious users may also value Ceramic Shield 2.
New buyers get stronger hardware at unchanged pricing. Owners of older Apple Watches may find cumulative improvements more compelling.
Verdict: Series 12 is a refined generation, not a dramatic leap. Its value depends heavily on which watch it replaces.
