Industry Odisha Bureau, Jul 5: Forecasting that the El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean is going to strengthen rapidly into extreme weather events between July and September this year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reportedly said on July 3 (Friday) that it would raise chances of heatwaves, droughts and heavy rainfall across large parts of the world.
As per international media reports quoting the WMO’s Global Seasonal Climate Update, “the seasonal-average sea-surface temperature anomalies expected to exceed 2°C in key monitoring regions.”
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo reportedly said, “El Niño conditions are already underway and are forecast to strengthen rapidly into a strong event. This will intensify the chances of drought and heavy rainfall and the risk of heatwaves on land and marine heatwaves in many regions of the world,”
The India Metereological Department (IMD) has already reportedly stated on June 12 that, “El Niño conditions has emerged over the equatorial Pacific and would impact the rainy season negatively in India, because the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) was neutral.”
According to the IMD, “The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a state that typically cannot counteract El Nino’s suppressive effect on monsoon rainfall, unlike a positive IOD, which can partially offset it by warming the western Indian Ocean and feeding monsoon moisture.”
It’s evident from the latest data that has reportedly confirmed India having “recorded a 40% monsoon deficit in June dubbed to be the fifth-driest June since 1901, while July’s rainfall forecast is at 94% of the long-period average (LPA), and the full season projected at 90% of LPA”.
However, the IMD reportedly “expects some good rains across the country till July 15”.
Meanwhile, the WMO’s forecast has reportedly “impacted the ongoing FIFA World Cup where extreme heat has affected several hundred thousand people across the host cities in the USA, Canada and Mexico, while a major heat dome forecast has been made over the East Coast of North America ahead of the July 4 weekend at a time when several stadiums are due to host matches”.
