Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 24: The India-EU FTA is expected to be signed in Brussels on December 16. European approval is advancing steadily. Implementation could follow in early 2027, diplomatic sources indicate.*
India’s long-awaited trade pact with the European Union is entering its final institutional stretch. The India-EU FTA is scheduled for signing in Brussels on December 16, 2026. Two diplomatic sources have separately confirmed the date. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony. The milestone caps years of stop-start India-EU negotiations.
Europe Clears the Next Hurdle
The European Commission has finalised the agreement’s text. It has forwarded that text to the European Council. The Council’s go-ahead remains a necessary step in the process. After the December 16 signing, the deal moves to the European Parliament. Parliamentary consideration could take another one to two months. That timeline points to a possible rollout in early 2027. Signing alone, however, will not bring the India European Union FTA into force.
India-EU Negotiations Reach Their Endpoint
India-EU negotiations restarted in June 2022 and concluded in January 2026. According to a diplomatic source, the pact enjoys majority support in Europe. That backing means separate ratification by each EU country is not expected. Both sides reportedly kept contentious issues out of the final text. The approach prioritised a workable free trade agreement over a perfect one.
December Tests India’s Trade Diplomacy
The EU signing forms part of a wider December push. Modi is expected to make back-to-back visits to Canada, the US and Belgium. Trade arrangements with all three are at very different stages.
India-Canada FTA Eyes Year-End
Modi could travel to Canada first, possibly around December 12. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said talks had made “good progress”. Carney said both leaders aimed to conclude negotiations by the G20, on December 14-15. India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, expects talks completed by November. He also expects Modi to visit Canada in December for a signing. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal broadly confirmed India is working to that timeline. These remain expectations rather than commitments.
India-US Trade Talks Stay Complicated
Modi is then expected at the G20 meeting in Miami. India-US trade will be on the agenda. Two arrangements are in play: an Interim Agreement and a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement. Modi and Donald Trump jointly announced the BTA in February 2025. It was meant to be completed by autumn 2025. However, 50% US reciprocal and penal tariffs in July-August 2025 derailed that plan. A February 2026 joint statement promised an Interim Agreement by March-April 2026. Both sides also pledged continued work on the BTA. Neither deal has materialised so far. A new US law could allow tariffs of up to 100% on India. The trigger would be India’s imports of Russian crude oil and natural gas.
Brussels Remains the Clearest Milestone
For now, the EU agreement stands furthest along India’s three trade tracks. Yet the European Parliament’s approval will still matter after signing. An early-2027 rollout remains the reported expectation, not a certainty. Canada’s talks await completion, while US negotiations face missed deadlines and tariff risk. December could prove a pivotal month for India’s economic diplomacy.
