Work From Office Jobs Rise 26%
September 2026 recorded 92,000 full-time WFO job openings. That marked a 26% increase from 72,000 a year earlier, according to Xpheno. The staffing firm tracked steady WFO growth over the past 12 months. Companies across India’s IT sector are seeking more office-based staff.
WFH and Hybrid Jobs Decline
Full-time remote openings fell 21% year-on-year. They dropped from 14,000 to 11,000, Xpheno said. Hybrid openings also declined, falling 7% to 14,000. The figures represent job openings, not existing employee arrangements. Flexible work remains part of the hiring mix despite the decline.
AI Changes India IT Jobs
HR executives link the shift partly to how IT work is organised. Companies are integrating AI and automation into technology projects. This can require tighter coordination between employees, executives said. Faster integration across multiple teams has also become important. Xpheno’s Anil Ethanur said early remote and hybrid models initially boosted productivity. Those gains proved difficult to sustain over time, he said. Low-overhead cost advantages eventually eroded, shifting focus back to long-term productivity.
Routine Remote Work Faces Automation
Careernet’s Neelabh Shukla said much routine post-pandemic remote work has been automated. AI is reshaping how technology work gets designed, he said. This shift particularly affects early-career employees, according to Shukla.
AI Jobs Increase Focus on Workplace Learning
Companies increasingly value hands-on learning for early-career technology talent. Direct exposure to experienced teams can support that learning, Shukla said. TeamLease’s Neeti Sharma linked office attendance with AI-upskilling initiatives. Flatter organisational structures are prompting more deliberate use of office space. Fewer management layers make the workplace a dedicated learning environment, she said.
Specialist FDE Roles Gain Importance
Forward Deployed Engineers represent an emerging specialist category, the data shows. These roles typically require domain-specific expertise. They also involve client-facing responsibilities. Ethanur said current AI development still needs people physically present. He expects WFO to dominate talent demand during this phase of AI’s evolution.
The hiring data points towards changing job design within India’s technology sector. Automation is absorbing routine remote tasks, while specialist and collaborative roles gain prominence. Companies are emphasising workplace learning alongside AI-upskilling efforts. Remote and hybrid openings persist, even as WFO hiring accelerates faster within the current market.
