Bhubaneswar, March 14: Even after taking several measures by the Government and close monitoring, on an average, road accidents have claimed lives of at least 15 individuals every day in Odisha during this year.
According to official data, 1025 persons were killed and 1594 persons injured in 1616 road accidents occurred on different roads of Odisha in between January 1 to March 6, 2026.
While analyzing the data, it was found that on an average, at least 15 human deaths occurred on the road of Odisha each passing day this year.
Similarly, on average, at least 24 persons were injured in road accidents every day in the State during the period.
During the 65 days, a total of 447 road accidents were reported in different national highways (NHs) of the state, in which 270 persons lost their lives and 469 others sustained injuries.
As many as 150 individuals were killed and 259 got injured in 246 accidents that occurred on state highways while 11 persons died and 10 injured in 13 accidents on expressways in Odisha.
During the period, 910 accidents have occurred on various other roads of the state, resulting in death of 594 individuals and injury of 856 persons, the data shows.
Maximum death of 276 persons reported in road accidents occurred on Sundays, followed by Thursday (264), Saturday (255), Monday (242), Friday (236), Wednesday (232), and Tuesday (209). Past 10 years (2016-25) accident data, shows that 53,551 people have been killed in road crashes in the State.
Similarly, 61,186 people have received grievous injuries while 45,146 people have sustained minor injuries in road mishaps during the past decade.
As per the statistics, a total of 1,13,325 accident cases have been registered in different parts of the State during the period.
As many 4,463 persons have been killed in road mishaps in 2016 while 5,709 people sustained grievous injury and 5,603 people suffered minor injury.
In 2017, at least 4,790 persons were killed while the toll rose to 5,315 in 2018 and 5,333 in 2019. However, the fatalities came down to 4,738 in 2020.
However, in 2021, fatalities rose to 5,081 followed by 5,467 in 2022 and 5,739 in 2023 and 6,142 in 2024. Highest fatalities of 6,483 persons have been reported in the last year.
A total of 9,817 road accident incidents reported in 2020, which rose to 12,782 in 2025, the highest in the past decade.
It further reveals that as many as 12,375 road accidents cases were registered in 2024 followed by 11,992 in 2023; 11,663 in 2022; 10,983 in 2021; 11,064 in 2019, 11,262 in 2018; 10,855 in 2017 and 10,532 in 2016.
