Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 16: Undoing the claimed wane and doldrums for over the last three years, movie analysts, citing the Indian box office figure, have reportedly claimed to have clocked a 5% rise in the footfall of moviegoers during the first half (H1), i.e. January-June, this year, while the registered footballs are also claimed to be still lagging behind the football figure that of the H1 2022.
Media reports, citing the analyses of the movie experts, have stated that, “Even though 378 million moviegoers have visited the Indian cinema halls from January to June (H1) of this year in comparison to the 362 million footfalls last year (2025), the figure still falls below the 400 million mark posted in the H1 (Janaury-June) of 2022”.
Media reports, citing the Indian Box Report from January to June 2026, have stated that, “The first six months of 2026 grossed Rs 6,398 crore at the domestic box office, making it the highest-grossing first half of any year post-Pandemic. It is 10% higher than the same period in 2025. Footfalls grew by 5% during the period, ending a three-year phase of decline and stagnation in footfalls”.
Media reports, citing the Indian Box Report from January to June 2026, have added that, “Hindi language’s box office share grew from 39% to 44%, while Tamil box office share witnessed a decline from 17% to 12%”.
It has further been reported that, “While the growth in footfalls was driven by the Hindi and Marathi films, the footfalls still remain below the 400 million (40 crore) mark that was achieved in the duration from January to June 2022 which witnessed movies like ‘K.G.F:Chapter 2’ and ‘RRR’ released in the first half (H1) of the year (2022).“
Media reports, citing the Indian Box Report from January to June 2026, have also stated that, “The record for highest annual footfalls post-pandemic is held by 2023, at 94.3 crore. With several big-ticket films lined up in the second half of the year (2023), including ‘Ramayana: Part 1’, ‘King, Toxic’, ‘Fauzi’, ‘Jailer 2’, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and ‘The Odyssey’, 100 crore footfalls is an achievable number for 2026.”
