Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 19: Indian cotton arrivals have started to improve across major producing regions. Fresh supplies from the 2026 Kharif crop are entering several markets. However, buyers remain cautious as global cotton prices continue easing. Weak yarn demand is also limiting aggressive purchases by mills.
Kharif Crop Arrivals Gain Pace
Daily cotton arrivals are estimated near 30,000 bales nationwide. Supplies are reaching markets across several Indian states. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are reporting around 4,000 bales each. Madhya Pradesh is receiving nearly 5,000 bales daily. Gujarat is also reporting arrivals near 4,000 bales. North Indian markets are receiving around 8,000 bales daily.
Arrivals Could Improve Further
Market participants expect supplies to rise from early October. The Kharif crop will increasingly reach mandis during coming weeks. Higher arrivals could improve availability for spinning mills. However, buyers are waiting for clearer price direction. That cautious approach is slowing immediate market activity.
Global Prices Pressure Domestic Market
International cotton futures have weakened recently. ICE prices fell sharply from earlier levels. That decline has reduced confidence among domestic buyers. Yarn prices remain closely linked with global cotton benchmarks. Weak export demand is also hurting spinning economics.
Auction Price Cut Fails to Spur Buying
Cotton Corporation of India has reduced its auction price. The cut was around ₹1,600 per candy this week. The revised auction price is now near ₹67,000 per candy. However, buyers have shown limited response. Many expect better prices as fresh arrivals increase.
Mills Prefer Wait And Watch Strategy
Spinning mills are avoiding large purchases at current levels. Cotton prices remain high compared with yarn realisations. That mismatch is squeezing processing margins. Resellers are also struggling to liquidate existing inventories. Buyers therefore expect further price corrections.
New Crop Competes With Old Stocks
Old crop cotton prices have already softened. Prices recently fell toward ₹66,500-₹67,500 per candy. The new Kharif crop is available near similar levels. That is increasing competition between fresh and existing stocks. Additional arrivals could intensify pricing pressure.
Indian States Show Mixed Acreage Trend
Cotton acreage stood at 109.61 lakh hectares by September 18.That was slightly below last year’s 110.60 lakh hectares. Some Indian states nevertheless reported higher planting. Telangana recorded the strongest acreage increase. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh also reported gains. Several other producing states saw acreage decline.
Seed Prices Support Raw Cotton
Raw cotton prices remain above minimum support levels. Higher cottonseed values are providing some support. Raichur prices are hovering near ₹9,300-₹9,500 per quintal. Adoni markets are trading around similar levels. Maharashtra prices remain lower because of higher moisture.
Market Focus Shifts to October
October arrivals will become critical for price direction. Larger supplies could improve availability substantially. Buyers may return if cotton prices soften further. Yarn demand will remain another important factor. For now, Indian cotton supplies improve while mills stay cautious.
