Industry Odisha Bureau, Aug 20: Scripting a success story of minting money from the market by dint of fine art, creativity, lava of imagination as well as spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings vented via painting brush, vibrant colurs and sketches, the Indian art auction market has reportedly been seeing a significant growth and record-breaking sales in 2025 as well as during the first six months/half of the current year till June.
Media reports, citing fine art analysts, have claimed that, “India’s art auction turnover jumped 87% to Rs 3,040.65 crore in 2025, while the sales of modern art rose 43.7% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 1,548 crore in the six months till June 2026.”
Media reports further claimed that, “While Indian art legend M.F. Hussain’s work ‘Untiltled (Gram Yatra)’ sold for Rs 119.1 crore (US$13.8 million) setting a new benchmark for modern Indian art, AstaGuru accounted for 28.31% of the market turnover with Rs 520.03 crore ($59.09 million) across 652 lots sold.”
Reportedly, “The Goods and Services Tax (GST) on fine art was reduced from 12% to 5% with effect from September 22, 2025 providing a direct advantage to art collectors.”
Media reports, citing views and opinions of fine art analysts, have stated that, “Indian modernists and select contemporary artists are regarded as blue-chip assets in the global market wooing byers from Europe, Asia and rest of the the western world. Such a development signifies a thriving Indian art auction market with substantial profits for artists along with the art collectors.”
