Industry Odisha Bureau, July 27: Latest reports have it that Apple is finally planning to unveil its much awaited AI-powered smart glasses. This is likely to happen at the Worldwide Developers conference (WWDC) in June 2027. This will be followed by a commercial launch later that year.
According to an official report, the company is targeting WWDC 2027 to introduce the device and give developers time to build apps before the glasses go on sale. The approach would mirror the rollout of the Apple Vision Pro, which Apple showcased months before its launch.
The report also says the smart glasses will not be featuring built in displays. Instead, users will be able to take photos, make phone calls, listen to music and interact with Siri using the device.
Notably, privacy remains one of Apple’s most important priorities. The report further says the company delayed the launch from its earlier target of late 2026. This was in order to address concerns around camera equipped smart glasses.
Unlike some competing devices, Apple is reportedly exploring on-device processing to reduce data sharing. It is also expected to avoid facial recognition, always-on recording and the use of customer recordings for AI training.
Reportedly, Apple is also testing additional hardware and software safeguards. One option under consideration includes a version of the glasses without a camera or with a camera limited to sensing functions instead of capturing photos and videos.
Apple’s focus on privacy comes as Meta’s AI glasses continue to face criticism over potential misuse. Privacy advocates have raised several concerns about smart glasses. These include users recording clothes without consent,. Some online videos have shown the devices being used to film strangers in public.
