Nearly 95% cloud cover and widespread rain have defied textbook forecasts a monsoon trough, local lows and a favourable Indian Ocean Dipole are, for now, outmuscling the Pacific
Industry Odisha Bureau, Jul 26: Forecasters had a straightforward expectation this year: a strong El Niño would thin the clouds, sink dry air over the subcontinent and leave the southwest monsoon short. What arrived instead was cloud cover across nearly 95 per cent of India’s skies and rain across regions the models had largely written off. The gap between prediction and observation raises an uncomfortable question has El Niño weakened, or is something closer to home simply overpowering it?
The answer turns on a distinction often lost in ordinary conversation. Climate describes long-run atmospheric patterns, the averages that global phenomena like El Niño shift over years. Weather is what happens on a given afternoon, driven by systems that can form and dissipate within days. This season, weather has been doing the talking.
The mechanism El Niño usually disrupts is well understood. In a normal year, Pacific trade winds push warm surface water westward, fuelling convection near Asia and feeding moisture into the monsoon. El Niño slackens those winds, drags the warm pool eastward and drags convection with it. The Walker Circulation the vast equatorial loop of rising and sinking air reorganises, its ascending branch migrating east while dry air subsides over South Asia. Cloud formation falls. Rainfall follows.
Three regional systems appear to have blocked that sequence. A monsoon trough sitting favourably across northern India has drawn moisture-laden winds inland. High surface temperatures and abundant atmospheric moisture have spawned active local low-pressure systems, adding convection on top of it. And a positive Indian Ocean Dipole warmer waters in the western Indian Ocean, cooler ones near Indonesia has strengthened moisture transport toward the subcontinent rather than away from it. Together, they have absorbed much of the deficit El Niño was expected to impose.
There is precedent. During the powerful 1997 El Niño, regional weather systems similarly cushioned an event that models had treated as decisive, showing that this kind of override is more than theoretical.
The caveat is timing. Troughs shift. Local lows stop forming. El Niño, meanwhile, remains fully active beneath the current cloud cover, and its potential consequences for crop output, food inflation, reservoir levels, groundwater recharge and hydropower have not been cancelled so much as deferred. For a country where the monsoon underwrites agricultural income and much of the wider economy, the season’s real test may come later and the forecasting challenge it exposes is only getting harder in a warming climate.
