Industry odisha Bureau, Oct 29: Cyclone Arnab has forced East Coast Railway (ECoR) to divert several trains. Services on the Howrah–Chennai route have been hit as floodwaters rise in Ganjam district.
The cyclone brought nearly 550 mm of rain to the region. This pushed the Bahuda River into spate. Water at Baghalati Dam on the river has breached the danger mark. The surge has also reached the railway bridge between Ichchapuram and Jhadupudi. Water levels at the bridge are now above the danger mark as well.
ECoR has stepped up safety measures to prevent any untoward incident. Officials are paying special attention to passenger safety at stations.
The railway is in regular contact with the Ganjam district administration. It is monitoring water levels and reviewing developments closely. A high level meeting with the State Government has reviewed the situation. The meeting focused on coordinating steps for safe train operations.
Many passengers remain stranded at various locations due to the disruption. ECoR is arranging food and drinking water for them. Extra staff have been deployed at affected stations. Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and ticket examiners are guiding travellers. They are also addressing complaints and offering on the spot help.
The railway is tracking grievances through social media and Rail Madad. This helps officials take quick decisions on passenger concerns. Travellers are being kept informed about changes in train schedules.
Updates are being shared through official social media handles and mobile apps. The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) also carries the latest information.
ECoR has urged passengers to cooperate with railway authorities. Travellers should check train status before starting their journeys. They are also advised to follow ECoR’s official channels for updates.
