Industry Odisha Bureau, Oct 29: India vice-captain Tilak Varma has revealed that head coach Gautam Gambhir wants the team to carry its T20I momentum into the upcoming ODI and Test assignments.
India lead the five-match series against New Zealand 3-0 and are targeting a clean sweep. Speaking ahead of the fourth T20I at Eden Park, Tilak said the team remains focused on winning the remaining matches despite a demanding travel schedule.
Tilak also stressed that players cannot use fatigue as an excuse at the highest level. He added that the team must maintain high standards and set an example for younger players.
According to Tilak, Gambhir emphasized during team meetings that the standard set by the T20I squad could provide momentum for India’s ODI and Test teams during the tour.
Tilak Varma also discussed his partnership with captain Shreayas Iyer. On which, he said that clear communication helps them share responsibilities on the field. They exchange ideas and discuss how Tilak can support the captain during matches.
The vice captain has also adapted to a different batting role. Previously batting at number three, he has recently been deployed at number five or six as a finisher.
Tilak explained that he looks for boundary opportunities while remaining patient when attacking shots are unavailable. He focuses on singles and doubles to build his innings before accelerating when possible.
Notably, India will aim to extend their winning run in the fourth T20I as they pursue a 5-0 series victory against New Zealand.
