Industry Odisha Bureau, Sep 30: Cement plants need a steady supply of electricity to keep running. Nuvoco Vistas Corp now plans to draw more of that power from wind and sun.
The cement-maker has partnered with Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions. The deal covers a wind-solar hybrid clean energy project in Rajasthan. The project also includes battery storage. It gives Nuvoco a direct stake in a source of renewable power.
Building a hybrid power system
The Rajasthan project has a combined capacity of 46.4 MW. Wind turbines account for 20 MW. Solar panels add 26.4 MWdc. The “dc” denotes direct current, the form of power solar panels produce.
A 2-MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) completes the set-up. Its 2 MWh measures stored energy, not generating capacity.
Pairing wind and solar is a deliberate design choice. Solar output follows daylight hours. Wind patterns can differ, sometimes continuing after sunset. Combining both can spread clean generation across more of the day.
Nuvoco takes an equity position
Nuvoco will buy a 26% stake in the project’s special purpose vehicle. The SPV is Clean Max Ilgohp Pvt Ltd. An SPV is a separate company set up to hold a single project.
The stake is in this project company, not in Clean Max itself. Financial terms, such as price or power tariff, were not specified.
Equity-linked structures are one way manufacturers secure renewable electricity. They tie the power user directly to the generating asset.
Cutting fossil-power exposure
The project’s stated aim is to raise renewables in Nuvoco’s power consumption. The goal is lower fossil-fuel use and fewer associated emissions. No figures for emissions savings or renewable share have been given.
The distinction matters. The project addresses electricity, one part of cement’s energy needs. It does not make cement production itself emissions-free.
Storage adds flexibility
The 2-MWh battery plays a supporting role. It can store surplus wind or solar output for later use. That adds flexibility when generation dips or demand shifts.
It complements, rather than replaces, the larger wind-solar system. Round-the-clock renewable supply has not been claimed for the project.
A template for heavy industry
The Nuvoco Clean Max project shows one way heavy industry can source cleaner power. It combines three elements in a single Rajasthan site. Wind and solar provide generation, while a battery adds storage. An equity stake links the buyer directly to the asset.
For a power-hungry cement-maker, cleaner electricity is a practical lever. The larger task of decarbonising cement itself lies beyond this project.
