Industry Odisha Bureau, Sept 29: In latest news, Indian shooter Neery Dhanda scripted history at the Asian Games on Tuesday. With which, she became the first woman to win an individual gold medal in the women’s trap event.
The 26-year-old shooter from Haryana showed a record breaking performance at the Aichi Prefecture General Shooting Gallery. She managed to score 28 points in the final. Notably, her tally surpassed the previous Asian Games record of 24.
China’s Sun Yunong won silver with 26 points. Meanwhile, Abdulmalik Hajar from Kuwait finished with 21, scoring a bronze.
Earlier, Dhanda had qualified for the eight shooter final after finishing joint top with Qatar’s Ray Bassil at 118 points, a Games qualification record. Her gold also came after she helped India win silver in the women’s team trap event.
Dhanda, who became the first Indian woman to win a World Cup trap gold in July, dedicated her Asian Games medal to Indian Army soldiers and late Raja Randhir Singh, who won India’s first Asian Games trap gold in 1978.
She also credited her cousin Lakshay Sheoran, a trap silver medalist at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, for motivating her to take up the sport.
In the women’s team event, Dhanda, Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer finished second with a combined score of 328. China won gold with 346, while Kuwait took bronze with 325. Ahlawat and Keet finished 16th and 23rd respectively in individual qualification.
