Industry Odisha Bureau, Sept 24: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coast. It has triggered heavy rainfall warnings across Odisha and several other states. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rain in parts of Odisha. Southern districts continue to remain under high alert.
According to the latest IMD update, the system was located over the north Andhra Pradesh coast near Kalingapatnam after moving northwestwards.
For Odisha, weather remains a major concern, particularly in the southern districts. The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall on September 24. This will be followed by very heavy rainfall on September 25 and 26. Thunderstorms, lightning and winds will also prevail across the state.
Authorities have stepped up preparedness in vulnerable areas. Evacuations and shelter arrangements are being carried out in districts facing the risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Schools have also been closed in several affected areas.
The impact is not limited to Odisha. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across coastal Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and parts of eastern India. The IMD has also warned of strong winds and thunderstorms in areas around the system.
Delhi, meanwhile, is expected to remain largely dry. Although, light rain could occur later in the week.
Notably, the system did not intensify into a cyclonic storm before crossing the coast. Therefore, it was not officially named “Arnab,” which is the next name on the North Indian Ocean cyclone naming list.
The Deep Depression over Westcentral & adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal, moved northwestwards with a speed of 5 kmph during past 06 hours, and lay centred at 2330 hrs IST of yesterday, the 23rd September, 2026, over north Andhra Pradesh coast near latitude 18.2°N and longitude 83.9°E, about 30 km West-southwest of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 80 km northeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).
It is crossing the North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam & Gopalpur, close to Southwest of Kalingapatnam. The front sector of the Deep Depression has entered into the land. The landfall process will continue for next 2 hours.
After the landfall it is very likely to move northwestwards initially maintaining intensity of deep depression for next 12 hrs.
